Some hard truths about disablity activism.

This is going to be a difficult post, to write as it is about the core of why I started the blog and it was about having something to work towards but I have discovered something, that I didn’t want to confront.   This is because disability despite international advancements still has a lot of stigma around it and stigma against people with disabilities.     I realize that there are programs to be able to help people with disabilities but in the short term, we have seen that people seem to get jealous when we level the playing field. I see that we do have things like the Americans with disabilities act, and we also have the anti-discrimination act in Australia but then when tempered with things such as “reasonable risk,” and “ the inherent ability to the job” we see that this could be considered code for people with disabilities to be not able to do the job when there are many people with disabilities that are able to work with a little bit of an adjustment. I   now see that di

Low cost ideas for community access

I have noticed since the NDIS has come through that person who qualifies for it doesn’t know what they can do with a support worker in the community, so I am doing this post to do what you can do and this is something that we need to discuss and some of the things would be developmental age approached, but we see that people need to be aware that you can do lots of things with a support worker, the first thing is you need to establish your goals, so do you need help in the house so this is where you can get into a good morning and evening routine.   Depending on your budget there is a lot you can do and then, you can work out the skills that you want to develop it might be housework and cleaning, but then it might be like myself more in-depth so actively looking for things to be off the internet so, I know that  1.          The public library is always a good starting point, so they often have more than just books but games, and CDs I know that mine has basic streaming services, an

A day in my life and how support helps me to be functional.

Disclaimer – That these are my own lived experiences and understanding from the research that   I do around the NDIS and health-related topics please be aware that it is informational only and not to be used as a substitute for professional advice or working with a Planner, Disability Advocacy service or talking to your Medical and Allied Health team.    Hey guys so I am going to try some different content this is a day in my life when I get woken up at about 7.00am to 7.30 in the house and then I get dressed and ready for the day. So this is generally coffee breakfast and then chores that I am responsible for in the house, so folding any laundry from the night before, and light cleaning such as washing up. Then I generally start recording on YouTube around 9.00am and then I start drafting the blog posts I have moments of I am really passionate about the blog and very meh moments, at the moment I am pushing myself past the meh moments and this seems to be a very big thing in my life

New direction for the blog

So This is going to be a shorter post but one that we need to discuss and this is the direction that this blog and the YouTube channel is going to go into as I am seeing that there isn’t the needed growth happening with this project so I am going to widen the scope so please let me know what topics you want me to cover and what you want me to do as well.   I feel that newer readers need to know the history of the blog and why I feel I need to pivot the blog. This is something that we need to be aware of and that we need to be able to understand what   will grow YouTube and the blog, so some of the ideas I had that I felt were good   but had very low view such as disability and the internet and disability and accessibility, as well   disability as represented in the media and this is where this blog started where I saw a show based on the books by Cassandra Clare the Shadow hunters series and they had a TV show adaption, that has found a cult following and we see that the book fans

ethical support agencies they do exist

Image
So one has to wonder why I felt the need to make a post like this, it’s not click bate but it’s because we need to know that they do exist as we are being constantly bombarded with all the things that big, corporatized agencies are doing we forget about the smaller start-ups that know the law and hold their support workers to a very high standard of care. For so long had to fight my agency I didn’t know what it was like to have a good agency and they do exist and this is why it’s so important to keep going and to understand that not every agency is going to suit you or your circumstances and to understand that if they have a human resources department that it’s there to protect the company not the clients so you need to be able to protect yourself.  This is where what the NDIS calls informal support comes into play as a good agency will work with your family and friends, they will help you to navigate tough times in your life, and to work with you to understand you and to make your

internet story time how easy it is to get taken out of context

Image
This is a post that I think is very timely to write as I write this in Australia several court cases are going on around the internet and how people were either exposed or taken out of context, and as a person with a disability or if you are a person with a disability this can be easily done and can really harm the person.  The internet has fundamentally changed the way that we communicate and even earn money or classify money, when I was a teen it was the “weird” and nerdy kids that had well of parents that had a computer and the internet and crypto weren’t even mainstream, I do admit I do miss those days because we had much more real-life connection and if you made a mistake you could change schools and or move jobs and people would be much more understanding. Yet now we face that the internet is permanent and we see that in Australia we have something very unique in our laws that came out of a very heart-breaking situation, a law that is called dolly’s law and it basically means

Disablity and manipulation a difficult conversations we need to have.

Disclaimer – That these are my own lived experiences and understanding from the research that  I do around the NDIS and health-related topics please be aware that it is informational only and not to be used as a substitute for professional advice or working with a Planner, Disability Advocacy service or talking to your Medical and Allied Health team.   This is going to be a difficult post to write, and I know it will generate a lot of discussion about manipulation, but we need to be honest it happens to everyone and you know that you are being manipulated.   However the question we need to ask here is what happens if you have a disability and it’s the only way to get what you want and have care workers that don’t realise you are able to do it. So the first thing we need to get out of the way is that some people with a disability have been raised in healthier environments than others and this means that they know healthy ways to get there needs to be met, in others it’s a massive issu

The difference between a support coordinator and other admistration staff in the NDIS.

Image
This is a really basic question that we see needs to be answered, and we see that it is something that we need to be aware of the people outside the NDIS don’t really understand the jargon that is within the NDIS and I am hoping that this year I can break it down a lot more but, a Support Coordinator is someone who helps you navigate the NDIS so it could be a person who attached to an agency or independent. I find that going independent works for me much better than someone being with an agency and this is due to the fact that I have had bad support coordinators they were doing dual roles, so I found that this isn’t a great idea but for others, it might work really well. So a support coordinator is someone who helps you navigate appointments, sets up service agreements and helps you to be able to work towards your goals and if you need a change of circumstances or are coming up to a plan review we see that this is where the really get to shine in that they specialize in building go

Complex needs and the start of the conversation.

So this is something that we need to discuss it is a term we often hear thrown around and it means very different things to different people, but in terms of the NDIS, it has a very specific meaning.   This is the term complex needs as a person with a disability can have either just their disabilities or chronic illnesses or have just one or the other as well.   Complex needs in terms of the NDIS: “ NDIS Participants are identified for the Complex Support Needs Pathway by the complexity of their situation and personal factors such as being homeless or returning to the community from living in residential aged care. Involuntary or voluntary involvement with particular government systems such as Justice or mental health would also be factors which would necessitate entry to the complex support needs pathway.” This is something, we need to be very aware of in that   support workers are undertrained in being able to work, with people with complex needs and we see that people need t

internet safety a warning and update

Image
This is a really important topic to talk about and we need to be aware of it as internet safety is something that we don’t talk about in the context of disability because people with disabilities often use the internet to connect with others and to be able to work remotely.    However, we are seeing that if you are isolated you are more likely to be scammed as a scammer would make you feel good and accepted, but their  end goal is to be able to make a connection and to make you feel safe but they are going to scam you. It is something that I feel we need to talk about it as it is something that people need to be aware of to talk openly about it because people are often ashamed to come forward and talk about it due to the complexity of the internet and the fact that our older generations don’t understand internet langue or etiquette that varies between sights as well and we see that this is something that we need to be aware of that various sights will target a different demograph
