Embracing Adjectives: Redefining Language in Disability Discourse

In the realm of disability discourse, language is a powerful tool that shapes perceptions and attitudes towards individuals with diverse abilities. Among the myriad of terms used to describe different aspects of disability, adjectives like "lower functioning," "higher functioning," and "behaviours of concern" have been subject to debate and scrutiny. However, there's a growing understanding that these adjectives serve a purpose in effectively communicating the unique experiences and support needs of individuals with disabilities. Rather than shying away from these terms, it's time to acknowledge their value and promote a more nuanced understanding of disability. First and foremost, it's essential to recognize that adjectives such as "lower functioning" and "higher functioning" are not inherently derogatory or demeaning. Instead, they are descriptive terms that provide important context about an individual's level of fu

Support workers and disablity services agenices we need to talk.

It’s bright and early in my housing facility and this is a good thing, I have checked off what I need to do, and when the others have gone to their activities I will start recording and studying, but I am finding that I must be doing something right as people who have never experienced disability either in themselves or in a family member or a fired seem to get very offended when I am suggesting easy things that need to change in people who work as support workers as I am finding that there is I thought two groups of people but I am finding it’s three, people who needed a job and have come into support work and do the job, people who have experience of disability and got attracted to the job and people who have a real passion for helping people with a disability and want to make a difference. The first two if they are willing and able to learn the difference’s between work and a calling it’s great but for those who just consider this a job and turn up on the dot of time, I am als

The difference between a reason and a excuse

I am studying at the moment but saw a post from a disabled creator on this platform talking about internalised ableism and I get that is a thing, as I know that I have it most of the time but where do we start to draw the line and say that we aren’t responsible for educating everyone we meet about our disability and that there is sometimes for hidden or physical disabilities a time to meet society’s expectations, for what we are about to do. We can’t expect the world to change for us when we aren’t willing to put in the work  and I know that this opinion will cop a lot of backlash but we need to be accountable to the best of our abilities and acknowledge how far we have come and we need to be thank full for what we have as we have more than the people who came before us and fought for us to have equal access and are still fighting for equal access, but what I don’t agree with is equity as this removes all the learning opposites and provides a space for learnt dependence and this can

The NDIS Reboot my thoughts on the matter

OK so this is the start of a new series about the national disability insurance scheme as we have seen the minister for social services the honourable bill shorten is on a mission 2 reboot the NDIS we have seen a lot of fear-mongering from not only the legacy media b but from other places as well including I'm not limited to blogs YouTube TikTok by people who have a vested interest in ensuring that the way they can profit from this scheme is valid sorry this would be agencies that provide support workers who are currently overpromising and under-delivering Kaya two people with a disability. We are also seeing the fear that's rightly placed by disability advocates, however,, we do see that there are some major rort’s of a system that was designed true provide support for the most vulnerable end profoundly disabled people in our community. There was never supposed today a rolling into the NDIS of state-based systems these were designed to stay and support people who needed less

Disability gate keeping

Image
This is such an interesting topic to get into that disability gatekeeping means that people, who don't have a disability, are telling those who do who qualify for care and who don't. It is such an interesting topic I thought I would have a crack at it.  This is the result of it and we see that it's a very interesting topic due to the fact that people need to be aware that this is happening and that people need to be guided into that it's actually happening due to the NDIS.

Disablity privellage or reasonable accomidations.

Ok so we really need to talk we now have medical professionals on drive time radio talking about the “gentrification of disability” and the Medicalization of disability and that people who are higher functioning don’t need the NDIS.   Well hold up this is not ok in the disabled community we talk about Allies, and this is not being a good Allie.   We need to talk about this a lot more than the medical professionals think it’s Ok to be able to essentially Gate keep our resources because they see an unfair distribution of resources, can I recommend that this medical professional do some reading on the history of the USSR and communism?   As we do unfortunately live in a capitalistic society and we see that this is just seen as a bad thing when people who start out having fewer resources are given the option to have the same punitive I see that equal opportunities are different from equality of outcome, equality of outcome can be quite dangerous and that we need to be able to work for
