You a not a burden

Image
This is something that I have had in draft form for a while but it needs to be said and that you are not a burden as we see that in coming up to Christmas we will have well meaning but uninformed people talking to us about life and asking us when we are getting a Job, going back to study or moving out of home.  Also l feel that this time of year for a lot of people brings a lot of stress so we need to say to people you are not a burden and  if you look at the volunteer hours if you had to pay someone what people with disabilities do their would be a massive economic burden to this and often people with disability’s do this for free, or for under the award wages. We also see that people are talking about what is in the news and often this is the NDIS and we see that this is a whole other issue due to the fact that people see it as a  cost blow out and don’t really understand that it is a complex program and often it’s not the clients that are defrauding the system it is the provider

Alec and Izzy: Brother and Sister Relationships

This is such an interesting post to write and I have been putting it off but I believe that the timing is right to do it. So we will look at the dynamic between Alec and Isabelle Lightwood, as this is an interesting one to do as they both take on very different roles in the show over its run we see that they are brother and sister yet they are in a very dysfunctional family yet we see that Izzy does try to look out for Alec as much as he looks out for her.  We see that she is protective of him but at the same time, he tolerates her attention-seeking behavior in the way that they are productive for intelligence in the Shadow world. We see this in Alec when they are on a hunt we see him notice the little things like faerie dust on her dress when they are at the packer's entrance to the hotel Demort when they are on the hunt for answers for Clary.   In the first season, we see that Alec notices physical things but has to be taught to notice social cues, something that people with Auti

Simon and Jace Downworlder Shadowhunter relationships an over view.

This post will be mostly focused on the first and second seasons of Simon as he is dragged into the shadow world, unwillingly he is turned into a vampire without his consent, and has to learn to adapt,  we see that he is horrified at what happens to him yet we see Jace beside Clary to support her as he has tolerated Simon from the start, he does become quite an asset in the Shadow World, yet we see him struggle with the fact that he has been turned into a monster, from a mundane that is trying to drag clary out of this world.  At this stage we see clary still seeking answers to why her mother didn't want her to be part of the Shadow world, we do very quickly find out why and we get a look into the mindsets of the Shadow hunters to the "Mundane," world.  We see in this clip that Jace is very confident in his abilities and isn't impressed with Simon at all, he thinks that Clary would be better off without him yet in the first couple of days we see that Simon sees how th

Isabelle Lightwood and Trauma part three - Shadowhunter's

Image
(Please be aware that this post contains sensitive content around addiction and mental health issues)   So this is a continuation of the series on Izzy lightwood and trauma caused by the shadow world.  She is the Sister of Alec lightwood and Jace (who is adopted) I have talked briefly about their relationships and how this plays out, in the shadow world.   As this world is a perfect storm for creating trauma. Due to its nature and it is a great portrayal of trauma in some ways.    this sees her seeking the next fix without concern for her safety and the safety of those around her. Hitting rock bottom is a myth often it is the people you are around that force you to get help and this is why Raphael encourages her to sweat it out.  Rock bottom for Izzy is her going to the hotel de mort and threatening Raphael so the justifications, excuses the lies about where you are all symptoms of addiction.  The reality is that addiction is a disease and diseases have treatments. The treatment for Iz

Shadowhunters the lighwoods Alec and Izzy

( Please be aware that this contains and talks about serious mental health issues and  Suicide  )  Alec Lightwood at the start of the show is very repressed we also see a very dysfunctional family that realizes how dysfunctional they are when they are under a spell that makes them see their worse fears play out and we see that Alec internalizes a lot and blames himself for things that he isn't responsible or he doesn't have the training to deal with.   Things like letting a demon into the institute result in a large number of Shadowhunters being harmed or killed.  His sister Izzy is one of them that ends up  possesses as well as himself and he ends up killing  Clary's mother ( this is a deviation from the books and was used as a plot device to have Clary come of age more dramatically)  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mqtbY89QfL8 We start to see the mental health burden on Alec that years of being told he isn't good enough play out in reality.   https://www.youtube.com/

Shadowhunter's the Alternative dimension and how they are different.

Image
This is a great episode and one that shows a very different side of the charcters as in the dimension the Shadowhunter's where so good at there jobs they weren't needed anymore and so the don't exist anymore.   Clary has been sent through a portal into this dimension due to one of the Seelie's having a life debt with her and it is payment for the life debt. They are helping her find the portal that the shard that her mother gave her. It leads her to this dimension and it is were the roles have been flipped. It is a dimension that is peaceful and free from demons and therefore the institute is a internet research facility not the Shadowhunter's home and facility. We see what the Shadowhunter's would be if they weren't needed to protect the world from demons and essentially policing the down world. So we see Clary studying art, Jace running a coffee van, Izzy and Alec working for the institute and Magnus as a Tarot card reader and psychic. Simon is also

Magnus and Blackfriars bridge.

So Magnus I have written about before is a very complex character both in the books and in the show. He is the son of a demon and a prince of hell. He can perform complex magic as is seen as a threat by the other warlocks, because of his power's.  In the books he has a different life story to the show and there was a want from the actor that played Magnus to explore the charcters backstory and how this is amazing for the show if it was to be continued, in various ways.  ( This being Harry Shum jr)  Magnus being a very complex character in the books we don't seem to see much of in the show his powers but one thing is that his realtionship with mental health is an interesting one to look at as, he is immortal.  Yet this isn't over stated in the show, it is mentioned in two seems in the show that he has had struggles with mental health.  We see him as a very hedonist character and this changes when he meets Alec as he has a purpose in life again. He has an anchor to guide him.

ALEC GRUMPY-CAT LIGHTWOOD - YouTube  - the hand movement is actually Matthew is a great portrayal from the books,  this is a great edit from the show and shows how Alec is actually the one who shoulders the responsibility of the Lightwoods, these are the family that run the New York institute.   This clip shows how Matthew Daddario the person who play's Alec nailed the role despite him not having blue eyes. He  notices that the  Shadow hunters are not very bright and their plans mostly fail and that this makes for great TV.  He shows the role by subtle but noticeable movements, that are mentioned in the books, things that stand out to me and others are,  The rolling of the eyes.  The rational mistrust of Clary  That he says what the others are not game to say.   Judging Mundane's, because they have a failure of imagination. There are also habits that Dom Sherwood has mentioned  during a recent podcast, that are both Matthew and Alec however it is mentioned that Matthews perso

Disablity and media - Continuing the conversation

This is a topic that I never thought would get so much traction, yet it has generated over on Quora a lot of discussion about how people are represented in the Media. It really does seem that representation of people with a disability is the last frontier, we are represented but not in a positive light.   In fantasy and young adult shows it is shown as something that needs to be overcome or if it is a world that has magic as a part of it, something to be healed, by magic this adds to the shame that people with disabilities feel because they don't fit into society in a normal way or even have what is considered  a normal life path of  School  University/ Tafe,  Work Dating Family of their own.  there is also the issue of being different in a society that still sees disability as something to be ashamed of this is where representation matters to people. To see themselves on a screen, we have seen major leaps around  Diverse casting Diverse screenwriting  Having different styles of
