what do we learn from risk.

Certainly! Here's the revised version with that addition: --- **The Balance of Risk and Benefit in Disability: Understanding the Importance of Calculated Risks** Living with a disability often means that people around you—family, support workers, or even medical professionals—may prioritize safety and duty of care. While safety is essential, it’s also important to recognize that not all risk is bad. In fact, calculated risks can lead to significant learning opportunities and personal growth. Striking the right balance between risk management, duty of care, and the potential benefits of taking a risk is key to developing independence and enhancing life experiences. ### Why Calculated Risks Matter A calculated risk is not about being reckless; it’s about weighing the potential benefits against the risks and making an informed decision. For individuals with disabilities, taking risks—like trying a new task independently or stepping outside of their comfort zone—can help build skills a...

Empowering Disabled Individuals: Beyond Blaming and Towards Self-Reliance"

Ok so I know I am going to ruffel some feathers with this post but I this moring I saw several low support needs disabled induluals starting there content with the govement, is dooming us.   So the question is why is the govement dooming you to a life of poverty, I know we are all stressed about NDIS cut backs as it was never desined to be a catch all for everyone, and I   aggree with the concept of the teird system as it was supposed to be about supporting thoughs who where medically complex and   needed lots of support, I under block funding would never have qualified for support and I am greatfull for the NDIS. But what about self responsibility and determitation in disablity if your low support needs and have an interent connection your not doomed to a life of poverty, there is nothing stoping you from studying onlne and there is many accredited and no accredited courses out there, there is supported workshops and I understand that they have issues wit...

Disability and budgeting Part one.

This is going to be an end-of-the-year post and it’s going to be a more in depth one, so I have one of my community access team (support organization) going on personal leave. But she is so on the ball and a true team leader in that she suggested to my mum we get my finances in order and it’s never too late or even to early if you have a disability to have your finances in order and the first step we are doing before we even need to think about doing a budget is doing something really basic, a list of things that I am no longer allowed to buy and this then shift me from the day to day goals and living to being able to have a holiday or a trip of some description, so this is going to be the start of that list   as I think most people as we are heading into Christmas are doing a combination of planning for Christmas and the new year as it makes sense when a lot of gift type items are around to by them when they are on sale and put them aside for the new year. I have a ...

Grooming with a disablity

Image
Hey all, so I was at the local op shop for some Christmas presents and I realized something when they had an influencer section in the shop, and this I have known for a long time but haven’t really acknowledged, basically that it is that grooming and presenting yourself well doesn’t have to be expensive, so I wanted to go through a few things that you can do to look presentable and I have also considered mobility aid hear as well, the first one seems really basic but a lot of people don’t know how to care for there clothing, so this is the first thing know how to clean your clothing and how to iron as I do find that having an ironed t shirt and jeans I feel so much more presentable.  Also learning how to get stains out is really important and how to keep whites white is important I know how to Dad does have some basic tips as well as asking your grandmother and I know that some universities have teamed up with Red Frogs and CWA to teach these skills, but you can also find som...

what is an ADL let's Break it down

Image
So this is going to be a very basic post and it’s one that I discovered needed doing as people are not understanding the NDIS and disability Jargon. I do admit it’s a lot to get used to and to be aware that you have to learn a new language essentially and if English isn’t your first language it gets even harder.  I have done a video on this that is embedded in the blog post but, ADLs are the foundations of life, they are Activities of Daily living, the really basic stuff, being able to move around without a mobility aid, being able to dress yourself, being able to eat, grooming and toileting and showering. There is a crossover between these and life skills and some could be considered both like hygiene in the home such as cleaning, changing bed sheets being able to vacuum or mop a floor, and cooking goes with being able to eat, but they are what make up the foundations of life and you can see how we say that it’s where you are first assessed on with applying for the ...
