Isabelle Lightwood and Trauma part three - Shadowhunter's

Image
(Please be aware that this post contains sensitive content around addiction and mental health issues)   So this is a continuation of the series on Izzy lightwood and trauma caused by the shadow world.  She is the Sister of Alec lightwood and Jace (who is adopted) I have talked briefly about their relationships and how this plays out, in the shadow world.   As this world is a perfect storm for creating trauma. Due to its nature and it is a great portrayal of trauma in some ways.    this sees her seeking the next fix without concern for her safety and the safety of those around her. Hitting rock bottom is a myth often it is the people you are around that force you to get help and this is why Raphael encourages her to sweat it out.  Rock bottom for Izzy is her going to the hotel de mort and threatening Raphael so the justifications, excuses the lies about where you are all symptoms of addiction.  The reality is that addiction is a disease and diseases have treatments. The treatment for Iz

The Lightwood's Izzy and Addiction - Shadow hunters

This is a continuation of the series of the Lightwood family that is talking about family dysfunction, this is the second post focusing on Izzy Lightwood and her behavior resulting from her relationships with her parents and later her brothers. We see in this clip that their mother favors political alliance's over the family's happiness, and order over comfort. Their mother needs a quick political alliance to restore their influence at the Clave, this is the organization that oversees the Shadow Hunters internationally. It is based in Alicante the Shadow Hunter's spiritual homeland. That is glamoured to Mundane much like most of the Shadow World. This leads to her seeking out relationships that don't have any real attachment to them before she meets Raphaelle and later Simon. Her secure attachment isn't to her Mother and Father it is to Alec and we see that he is the Caregiver of the siblings. Izzy is anxious in her attachment style, she is attached to her

Magnus and Raphael The downworlders series continued

So Raphaelle is an interesting downworlder and isn't seen in the show as much as in the books, he is also another character that is aged up in the show, as in the books he is a teen and Magnus teaches him to control his powers and sends him back to his family.  Yet in the TV series, he is the New York clan leader that lives at a hotel de mort.   He is also intertwined with the life of Magnus as he is one of the downworlders that Magnus has taken under his wing, both in the show and in the books. Magnus's role as the High warlock seems to be a political one more than practical but still can charge for his services. We see in later episodes when Mangus isn't the high warlock him charging for his services even to the Shadowhunters.   Yet in these clips, we see that Magnus as he says in one clip that he practically raised Raphaelle, and can read him like an open book, so knows when he is being lied to.  We also see this skill come out with Alec as well.  However, in this clip,

Magnus and the other downworlders - The Seelie Queen.

Magnus is a warlock and has very complex relationships with the other down worlders these being the creatures that are in the shadow world but have demon blood in them and therefore are considered to be what the Shadowhunters call down worlders and they see the shadow world very differently due to being long-lived or immortal.  However, with Mangus, he has to play the long game due to his being immortal. He sees the long game as does the Seely queen. The queen has a very different relationship to Magnus in the books the current Seelie queen united the two courts, the Unseelie and the Seelie court they united to have a child.  This stopped the war that the Shadowhunters in Londen stopped due to one of the blackthorns being part Seele and we see that this does become an issue in the books we see that Mark and Kiren often are put between the two worlds due to this and we see that this can become an issue as well due to Mark being punished with having to join the wild hunt and it was the u

Magnus and Alec

This is a relationship that has been written about but I would like to explore it in the context of healing from trauma, as both characters have a massive amount of trauma and this relationship isn't trauma bonding it is healing from trauma, both Magnus and Alec have massive amounts of trauma.  Magnus a lot stems from the way that the shadow hunters have treated him over the years and this is why he has a mistrust of the current generation of Shadowhunter he admits to Alec that he closed his heart off for a lot of years.  What isn't explored in the show but is in the books is stated that Alec is the spitting image of Will Herondale a  Shadowhunter that he had a complex relationship with and this is why he does a double take in the show when Alec sees him at his club for the first time.  Shadowhunters Reduced BGMusic 01x04 - Magnus sees Alec for the first time. - YouTube As I have stated before the book Magnus and show Magnus are very different characters, however, both have v

So I have written a lot about the character Magnus from the TV series Shadowhunters, and I am focusing on the TV character’s as I haven’t read the books in quite a long time. But I thought it was time to focus on Alec(Shadowhunter) as he is an interesting character when you look at the relationships he has with the other people on the show.   As the settings of the show are essentially mirroring a lot of real-life issues.   There has been a lot written on this and discussed both off and online. These are issuing that young people face in what essentially is a very traditional society, as Alec is a Shadowhunter and their purpose in the world is to hunt demons, they are trained from a very young age, to do so and this is reflected in the show and the way that even the actors understand it. As the younger Shadowhunters find relationships, Alec seems to be the odd one out and it comes out in the show that he is gay and closeted. It is revealed in the episode titled raising hell in th

Men and Consent why we need to include them in the conversation.

Their lives can be ruined by rumors and innuendo just as much as women especially people in the public eye, and people in such diverse industries. That young man fears offending women due to equality has been taught that women get offended by it, this could be true for some people but not for all, women, and in some industries not all of them. Social media has made this so much worse as people don’t forget anymore it stays up forever and not everyone every day needs to be reminded of one small mistake they made. It can also be taken out of context in a very real way and if people have video editing skills it can end up on the internet and cause a lot of damage to reputations.   People don’t have the compassion they used to, and people would take the time to educate themselves on what they had done wrong and how they could not make the same mistake.     Has dating ruined the way some men feel about relationships or being in a healthy relationship? So things like the men go t

Diversity in the media.

This is more around same-sex couples and the actors that played the characters in the TV adaptation of Shadowhunters from the book series by Casandra Clare.  They were respectful in their representation of this couple and showed a side that hadn't really been explored before in a fantasy setting and this show didn't shy away from very real complex issues.  This was groundbreaking in its portrayal of same-sex couples and treating them like any other couple and not queer bating it.    Shadowhunters Wins Outstanding Drama Series l 28th Annual GLAAD Media Award - YouTube As Matthew Daddario has said in this clip at an award show he was glad that people knew that people would be crazy to put him up there as at the time he had very little experience in navigating the media and being a big name.  Shadowhunters Wins Choice Sci-Fi/Fantasy TV Show & Choice Sci-Fi/Fantasy TV Actor - YouTube He has also been an actor that has had some hiccups but he has been able to recover from them

Disablity media and great examples of well written and acted scenes

This one I can't stop myself from watching it. It's a great example of how people respond to trauma, especially when they lose what they see makes them feel like they are contributing to society,  and can hide what they really feel.  The people around them want to help but if you can't let them help you how are you able to be helped.  Yes, this is a Young Adult show but even the actors have said that this is a show that has resonated well with all age groups.  It talks about things that resonate when people get diagnosed with a disability or chronic illness and because of this their life fundamentally changes, so what now is the question. In Magnus's case, he has a built-in support network, and Alec forces Magnus to stay as he knows that this is what he needs. It also showcases the inherent power imbalance when a situation dramatically changes around what people see as normal, as in this case, Magnus loses his magic, decisions are made for him and people don't re

Disablity and Media - tropes and the need to move beyond them.

Disability and media Need to move beyond tropes, - How do we do this?   I have watched some actors I respect because they have an awareness of what needs to happen to shift the media landscape and that it’s a long-term shift because of the way projects are pitched and developed, and I agree with them that it starts in the writers’ rooms, the writers, producers, and showrunners are opening up to more honest storytelling as responses change around storytelling.   They are starting to have an awareness of the shifting media landscapes and how we are consuming different media, so not only competing with streaming services that have saved several shows because they aren’t so reliant on media ratings. Also, there is a growing awareness of the shift to smaller formats like YouTube and live streaming, so they aren’t competing they are joining them, giving more access to actors and behind-the-scenes access, to how they make the shows. Which shows not only the actors but the crew. Unders
