Title: Essential Items for Staying Organized and Clean with a Disabilit

In my last post, I talked about the challenges of staying organized with a disability. It took a different direction than I expected, but that’s okay! Now, I want to focus on the physical items that can help someone get organized with minimal assistance, especially if they’re moving out for the first time.

### Electronic Tools

If the person has a smartphone, using a calendar app for appointments, work, or volunteering commitments is a great start. However, phones can be hacked or fail to charge, so having a physical calendar or diary as a backup is essential. These can often be found at newsagents or even given out as Christmas gifts by local pharmacies. I’m also assuming that the person has basic stationery like pens and pencils to write things down. However, in support work, never assume that the person has what they need—always ask to ensure they have the necessary tools.

### Cleaning Essentials

For maintaining a clean living space, here are the basics:

- **Laundry**: Laundry powder, a washing basket, and a hamper.

- **Kitchen**: A kitchen bin with bin liners, washing-up liquid or dishwasher tablets, and cleaning cloths. Gloves are optional but useful for sensory issues.

- **Bathroom**: A small bin for hygiene items, a bleach-based cleaner or a gentler alternative, along with a cream cleanser and a stain remover for clothes.

- **Floors**: A vacuum cleaner is a must for keeping carpets clean. For hard floors, a mop and bucket with a floor-based cleaner will help maintain hygiene and prevent slipping hazards.

### Bedroom Organization

It’s important to consider how often bedding is changed and whether there’s enough. New bedding can be found at Kmart or charity shops, but I recommend buying doonas and mattresses brand new to avoid hygiene issues.

Storage is also crucial. Boxes for underwear, socks, and other clothing items can help keep things organized. Coat hangers are often available for free in community groups, but the person may prefer to buy new ones.

### Clothing Care

An iron and ironing board are useful for keeping clothes in good condition. Family or friends might have extras to donate, which can save money.
