The mytholigical links in the Shadow world - warlocks and demons
So I was talking about Mangus and the Box and mentioned that
there was a shadow hunter that was half shadow hunter, half warlock and I mentioned that her grandfather was besbub
one of the princes of hell, and lord of the flies. It also depends on what religion that you are looking
through as they can be seen as just beings that represent humanities darker
side or they can be actual demons if you are looking at them through the lens of
the monotheistic Abrahamic religion’s,[i]
that have a structure of a god, angels that do his bidding or have a mind of
their own and then fallen angels or demons so we see that some demons where in
some pre monotheistic religions taking over their culture we see that they might have been worshipped as gods by
the people indigenous to that area, like we see that Asmodus is powerful enough
to leave the realm he rules over in the books and show Edom, but we see that
besbub can’t and needs a human host to possess, and often this possession was
thought to be a take over by the gods and we see that Asmodus does make the
comment that he would have liked magnus to keep in touch and makes the quip about
even offering the occasion blood sacrifice every century, however as we see that magnus is more in touch
with his humanity as he went no contact as we see that he was used by Asmodus
to do his dirty work as a child until he was taken in by the silent brothers
and this gave him the ability to even be able to invade their minds.
We see that in the show all the warlocks have one demon
parent and Tessa is unique in that she can produce children we see that this is
due to a relic called the clockwork angel[ii]
a pendant that holds the soul of an angel, the angel Ithureal and we see that each
of the Angels and Princes of hell have mythology outside of this world and it
is this that I want to unpack and we see that people are aware that there are seven princes of hell in general culture. [iii]
, Lucifer — Pride and we are mostly familiar with his story he was the leader
of the rebellion in heaven against God
and we see that people don’t understand that this has a lot more complexity to it
in the stories as each demon is a fallen angel and each demon is a metaphor for
a common sin or vice and we see that the warlocks have a demon parent and given
that these demons are fallen angels, we know that god gave the angels
permission to walk the earth, and so it makes sense that most of the very
powerful warlocks have a demon parent that is a prince of hell and we see that
this is where some of the warlocks carry some of these traits, we see that this
is something that we know and we see it
very subtly linked back to the warlocks
in there traits so we see that in the show we see that Mangus is the sun of
Asmodus, the demon of lust so we see that this makes sense that magnus is
portrayed as a lothario type character and we see that people are unable to see
past this except Alec and his family of origin eventually come around to
it, and accept Mangus as he is faults
and all.
So we see that Beelzebub is the symbol of gluttony and often
represented by the lord of the flies [iv]and
this is what they referenced when a character that was only in the show became Magus
superior officer when he lost the high warlock position, a political position
in both the show and books and we see that when they being Asmodeus and Mangus
turned Lorenzo into a lizard, or to be more precise a Chameleon[v]
in the show a lizard we see that he was
dining on flies so we see that this worked on several levels.
We see that this
world has a rich mythological history and we see that the shadow hunters have two hard and fast rules the first one is emotions
cloud judgment, and the second is the law is hard but it is the law and this I have
blogged about before, we also then see that they do change the laws in some
cases, then we see one that isn’t more a
law but a saying that all the stories are true and this is quite an interesting
one as it creates a melding of the worlds both the shadow world and the “mundane,”
world and the mundane world is where a lot of shadow hunters escape to but we
see that the inverse is also true that the Shadow world does provide some havens
for people who have been brought into this world, whether by there own volition
or by a turn of events. So vampires have
the hotel demort, which translates to the hotel of death, the warlocks have the
limited protection of the spiral labyrinth, then we see that the wear wolf’s have
the jade wolf in the show in the books we see that it’s more takes and that they
have a pack bond and have a “mundane,” job so we see that in the show Luke is a
cop but in the books, he is a rare book store owner and this is where the show
took inspiration in that they had Maryse after her banishment by the book store
that was owned by the warlock a lot when they were looking for the mortal mirror,
and we see that this became a front for powerful spell books and a record of
where an angelic relic was kept I will
do a post on the relics and where the fit into the mythology of the world in
that we see that there is allot of relics that have been hidden due to there
power in this world, weather they rightfully belonged to the angels, shadow
hunters, or the demons. We see that this
relic ends up in the hands of the Seely queen and I mention it because we see that when Clary was bound to
her brother Jonathan in the show by Lilith and I have done some posts on this
as well
https://annieswonderlanda.blogspot.com/2022/09/lilith-in-shadow-world.html
however we see that
she is said to be the mother of all demons and Adams first wife we see that she
connects clary and Jonathan on a blood level with a rune, and we see that the
only other time that this rune was use was in a copy of Paradise lost that Jace
had as a child that was illustrated by the silent brothers and we see that it
was that lucifer the demon king of hell, was connected with his brother the arch
angel Michael and that that battled with this search glorious, and it is the only
thing that can separate them from each other as they have a bond similar to a parabaiti
but not the same as if you hurt one you hurt the other and I must mention that
in the books it is Sebastian that clary is bound to and they become team evil in the books due to the
demonic influence on clary and we see that we have team good and team evil in Thurl
and this is a world where valentine one the uprising and that he commands
armies of endarkened shoulders, and we see that the shadow hunters are openly patrolling
on the streets, we only see one endarkened/ forsaken in the show in that he
delivered Hodge the faerie communication ring, and we see that it was a
distraction but they have a much bigger role in the books.
But in going back to
the demonic mythology we see that the demons all represent one of the 7 deadly sins
and this is such a subtle but creative nod as we do see that the warlocks do
have a tendency to display some of these traits such as Mangus being Asmodeus son
we see that he is portrayed in the first
episodes that we see him as a bit of a lothario and we see him surrounded
by an entourage of people and we see that this is where pandemonium comes into
it but we see that this was masking and I will do a deep dive into Mangus and masking
behaviour as we see in the books he does like to party but generally hosts them
at his home, and we see that this is where in the books the shadow hunters do
pick up a lot of there information, so it’s a nod to the books having him as
the owner of the pandemonium night club, we see that this is parallel to the
books where in the past a warlock by the name of hyper vex hosted a salon by
the same name and it was where there was entainment and poetry readings suitable
for the forward thinkers of the Victorian era of London and we see that Mangus
does have the good sense to flee from Paris to London when he failed to glamor Marry
Antoinette to get away from the rebels.
( this is in the Bane chronicles and is such a revelation into Mangus's past
as is the red scrolls of magic) we see that this is interesting because Mangus doesn’t take payment and we see that the warlocks don’t do anything
without payment if magic is involved.
So this goes into Magnus having greed for money and I would argue that he is immortal and has to fund his lifestyle somehow and he would have seen the fall of empires and countries and with that whole economic structures so this is why he asks for payment in rare objects. It is something that he can sell that won’t lose value and often it will become an antique, as we see him stuffing the bag when he is in India with Simon.
