Mangus and the Box of memories unpacked a bit more.

 

So we see that Mangus bane from the TV show shadow hunters is immortal but we see him keep a box of memories from his past serious relationships and we see that this is a challenge for Alec his husband as Alec hasn’t had relationships before and this can be a massive issue and we see that this is very similar to people with a disability who are unable to let go of things that serve no value to them at all and this is quite interesting in a way that we see that there is links that are yet to be explored,  in this way but it is to be explored that Mangus is immortal so uses this box as a reminder of those who he has lost and we see that he  considers it not a blessing put a curse that he won’t die and that he will lose the people that he has loved one day and this triggers jealousy in Alec due to the fact that Alec knows that he will die and we see that this causes friction as they come from very different worlds, Alec being a shadow hunter and we see that this isn’t easy for Magnus to deal with as we see that the Down worlders the word for those who have demon blood or a drawn to the shadow world, are almost akin to second class citizens and the Shadow hunters used to hunt them for sport and felt when this was taken away from them they should remain in their place. 

This is very similar to the “mundane,” thinking at the time and we see that the attitudes in the Shadow world are very similar to those in the era that is happening so we see that Mangus would have seen the rise and fall of empires and in one book did forget that he founded a cult, ( hell of a thing to forget) and we see that he has to essentially mask in each culture to fit in and we see that many of the history of what Mangus has done for the shadow hunters is down played where it needs to be focused on and the reason he moved to New York is also down played but for those who are readers of the blog but are unfamiliar with the show and books,  Magnus saved  a Shadow hunter who’s heritage is half shadow hunter half warlock and it is due to a clockwork pendant that held the soul of an angel we see that she was able to have children and this is why the Herondales have unique abilities that we mostly see in the warlocks given that they have a demonic parent, and we see that James  Herondale grand father was besebub a demon prince of hell known as the lord of the flies,  as Tessa was his mother and she is a Shadowhunter and Warlock so unique among her kind and is now a protector in the spiral labyrinth, where the Warlocks have there headquarters.   Tessa was born to an unmarked shadow hunter so she didn’t know she was a shadow hunter because like Clary’s Mother she had escaped and made a life for herself in the “mundane,” world as there were two options for a shadow hunter in love with a mundane to leave the society of shadow hunters and the clave and become a mundane or for the mundane to risk drinking from the mortal cup and ascend to being a shadow hunter and many didn’t survive the ascension process.

So we see that they have powerful families that are associated with the shadow world and the Herondales are one of these ones but Mangus due to the way that Tessa and James where treated in London he decided to leave and start a new life running a speak easy in New York that in the show became pandemonium, a night club this makes me wonder why he didn’t go there when he lost his apartment in the show as he would have had the income from this to go get a new place instead of staying at the institute but I know it is to show Alecs kindness to him due to the fact that he says he would get a hotel room, but we see that Alec needed to break Mangus heart to save him and I have talked about this in previous  posts but we see that Magus is running away from his past and I will be doing a post about magnus culture and addiction as he drinks to forget and we see that this is pushed on to Izzy with addiction , but he doesn’t consider it an addiction due to the fact that it is partly cultural, due to growing up in an area where the water wouldn’t have been safe to drink and we see that this becomes an issue, but we see that he also does drink coffee as well, and he does in the show give up drinking as well.

But we see that in going back to the box that it is a reminder of his past and  love in his life due to the fact that we see that the shadow hunters consider him a lothario and this is pragmatic due to the fact that in the books we see that the shadow hunters don’t really consider information sharing a great thing to do and keep secrets from other institutes, this at the time might not have been a massive issue due the fact that things like the internet didn’t exist and we see that in the show they do  a lot of information sharing,  but the Clave does keep some things secret and I do agree that some secrets are necessary to maintain order but the secrets that the keep are ones that Mangus could keep to himself but we see that this adds to his trauma about this as well, and we see that Alec doesn’t see that this relationship is difficult for him due to Alec not having  had relationships before and we see that this becomes an issue due to the fact that he doesn’t know how to navigate them well. 

He had an arranged marriage in the TV show but in the books, he hid his relationship with Magnus due to the internalized homophobia that he had and the disapproval from his fellow shadow hunters, but we see in the show he comes out at his own Wedding and we see that he does, in the end, marry Magnus and we see that Mangus admits that he had closed his heart of for nearly half a century. 

Therefore was looking for experiences in the people that he hooked up with and we see that it does way on him at times due to the way that society treats people who are looking for experiences, we also see that he was masking his pain from losing a previous lover and we see that the warlocks do keep to there own kind and we see that this is where the vampire Camille Belcourt does know how to manipulate Mangus.
