Magnus Bane and Comfort items Part one.

So this is going to focus on Magnus from the TV and book series shadow hunters, So as we are aware Mangus is a Warlock and the warlocks are immortal downworlders, the world is quite brutal world expands as there are Shadowhunters that are born to hunt demons and to help protect the world from demons and they live in what they call the shadow world and this world is quite a brutal world and even though it does have it’s own rules of engagement and equivalent to the Geneva convention, and human rights, the accords and we see that Magnus was at the signing of the accords and have seen things change over the centuries of both Shadowhunters and mundane attitudes towards down worlders or classes and the shadow hunters seem to follow this trend.  And there are a lot of differences between the shadow hunters and the down worlders but there is also a loss of relics that belong in this world.

Some through design and some through war and age, as we see in the books that there is a whole line of Shadowhunters that have escaped and that they are now rare and that is why they need the mortal cup as in past ages there were Mundane’s with the sight the could ascend to being a Shadowhunter but we see that this has become rare and we also come to see that Magnus has some relics that have odd significance to him so these are objects that people might not want to be associated with but for him, they are the only connection to his Mother as in the books she committed suicide with this Dagger and it holds a very significant place in his heart as we see that Mangus carries a lot of trauma and that his swagger and humour is actually at its core is a defines mechanism, this show’s how much power and object can have over someone and how they need to be treated in a way.

Shadowhunters | Season 2, Episode 15: Magnus Opens Up About His Childhood | Freeform - YouTube

This links into people with disabilities having weird comfort items that don’t seem, “ age-appropriate,” but we see that this is a whole other blog post about being age appropriate but is it needs appropriate it could work and we see that Magus takes the dagger from Simon who was about to use it to open a box of grave dirt, and we discover later in the show it’s Camille’s grave dirt and whoever has the grave dirt, can control that vampire. This is something that we need to be really aware of due to the fact that Simon is still learning this world and sees that Magnus has a really over the top reaction to trying to use the dagger but he calls it but its ethnic name a carriers this shows his immortality due to the fact that the usage and words change over time and he would have to re learn the rules of languages as well, [i] and often times it is let slip around how many languages he understands due to being the most powerful warlock that the Shadowhunters have known and his life through various relationships is intertwined with Shadowhunters and we see that this is something that he needs to deal with as he is immortal and we see that this is where having physical stuff is important to him and his very human need for closure to know where people have ended up and this dagger is some thing that reminds him of his mother as he lost both his parents at age 10 and was taken in by the silent brothers that become very long lived and are the shadow worlds equivalent to Monks like the Iron sisters are the equivalent to Nun’s.

It should be said that the dagger that Simon picks up has a very significant link to magus and we see it mounted in his appartement, in later episodes and this is interesting due to the fact that the dagger was the one that his birth mother used to commit subside and this Magus we see carries a lot of guilt about and doesn’t see to be able to get over it, easily due to the fact that he perceives he killed both  his parents his mother and his step father by existing, when in the books it’s not that simple due to the fact that his stepfather we see tried to purify him by trial by water and so it was kill or be killed, we see that until this happened Magnus was razed in a loving traditional home as we see that they had a farm and, it wasn’t just a hut it was a proper house that is suited to the climate it was in this being Indonesia, or at the time Magnus was a child the Dutch east indies he was raised in   we see that he was a Dutch settler his father was Dutch and his mother a person ingenious to the area, we also need to be aware that  the Dutch east indies before colonisation where a collection of over 200  tribes with distinct languages and cultures,  and this is complicated but we see that people need to be aware of this due to the fact that Magnus heritage would have put him at risk at times and it would have been his magic that kept him safe and we see that he was found by the silent brother’s and taken in by them, and this would have been a very strict life for a child  but we see that he was in control of his magic, but not guided on where and when to use it.

As if he was found but the people indigenous to the area we see that they would have worshipped magus as a living god, but we see that he says to Alec that he was an abomination and this shows that his parents would have been, settlers, and we see that he does mention about doing his “birth father’s dirty work,”  as we see that Asmodus was his father and this is a prince of hell namely he is the demon of [ii] Lust and we see that Magnus as a defence mechanism, as he mentions to Alec that he hasn’t opened his heart for centuries,  seems to have some of this lust and we now understand that it is a complex relationship he has had over the years with sensory seeking behaviour’s.

That filled that space that has trauma and we see that it’s not until he meets Alec that he deals with this trauma and starts to understand it and process it as it is a brutal instrument to commit suicide with and there are fan theories that maybe it was Asmodus that killed his Mother and we see that he suspects that as well, however in the books she did hang her self as she couldn’t live with the shame of having born a son of a demon, and this is something that we see carry over to the show the fact that Mangus has one of his core beliefs that he has an ugly dark side, of himself and that he doesn’t even show it to his boyfriend Alec and I am going to work on the book side of this relationship. Because Alec hid this relationship from his family, but in the show, he was much more open about it in a way due to the way that the show was able to differ from the books and this was due to copyright issues and consent.

In the show, Magnus mentions that he has closed his heart up and hasn’t been close to anyone in over a century so this shows that Mangus has been through a lot that makes him want to escape and he is the Shadoworld is known as a bit of a lothario, and this is where Alec hides the relationship but we see in the show he is much more open about it and this has it’s ups and downs as they can use other side characters to talk about having to be in the closet and having to keep your personal life separate from work but given that the Shadowhunters are essentially born to this world and lifestyle we see that they don’t really have much of a choice as in the show we see that the life in the institute and this is because being exiled to New York was part of the lightwoods punishment for being in the circle a movement that I have talked about in previous blog posts.

So we see that Mangus has a lot of memories stored up in the objects that he collects and values, as well as knowing that money is a made-up concept as anything can become the currency and this is a very complex argument that needs to be explored that objects have inherent value and we might not see it at first and this is where the links to disability come into play as we start to see what people value might not have value to you and we have to be careful about throwing things out but preventing people from becoming herders is important as well,   as an object that you consider to be rubbish might be valuable to them, and we see that this is where having compassion and good communication skills do come into play and understanding that people can have what we would consider a weird attachment to things that aren’t considered age appropriate in a normal context.

We see that Magnus respects boundaries but we see that he also has a very human side and doesn’t let anyone disrespect him this would also make him powerful, in the way he has very human needs in being able to express his emotions and grieve for the people he has lost over the years and the fact he lost his parents early in life and this would have to make him have to learn that life isn’t fair very early in life.  We see that he also has a box of memories of past lovers that we will talk about later as it triggers his husband as he sees that he won’t die this is something that Alec Magnus’s husband gets very jealous over and we see that people need to be aware of emotions and jealousy is something that is a very powerful emotion in the way that we see that people need to be aware of in a way.

That we are often motivated by jealousy and we see that Magnus can make people jealous, and this is where he is often found to be motivated by money on the surface but in later episodes, we see that his jealousy does get in the way of some relationships and the understanding he has of these relationships is quite difficult because he is immortal and tries to seek out other immortals and has had quite a lot of lovers, but we see that this information is quite hard to come by because the shadow hunters relics and information have been lost to both war and time, and this is where the current New York-based shadow hunters are in the show have great information but it is lacking in some fundamental ways at times due to the dark war and that Magnus has live all around the globe and this is something that the institutes don’t seem to do a great job of sharing information and they don’t seem to be that bright, they seem to hunt first and ask questions later.
