Hodge in the Shadow hunters world.

So I am learning never to say never in blogging and I am going back and revisiting a character that was very much a driver in the books but not mentioned in the show. This person is Hodge stark weather. The lightwood family tutor.

So we see that he was punished by the clave for his role in the uprising as well however we do see that goes through a massive transformation in the show and we see that he wasn’t mentioned much in the show because they aged him up for the show and didn’t show that he was their tutor and that he couldn’t leave the NY institute and this was his punishment he couldn’t leave.

In the books he is more elderly, content, and bookish, he also has a massive greenhouse where he has a lot of plants with that he can make a lot of potions, we also see that it supplies a lot of the institute’s food.

As Hodge is a tutor for the lightwood family children and they see him as part of the family, however. We see that they haven’t been told the full story of the uprising as it is suppressed knowledge. Not even having a basic level of knowledge like German children, are taught about the rise of the Nazi party, and they are taught that even Germany apologized for the holocaust.

In the Shadowhunter’s world, any sign of loss of control by the clave is seen as a weakness and we see that this is why they suppressed the knowledge of the uprising to prevent it from happening again.  However, we see that they have access to the immortal down worlders that were eyewitnesses to the events due to their immortality and they have excellent memories.

This is very similar to when people who don’t know the history of the medical model of disability, vs the social model of disability as it came about from the eugenics movement in Nazi Germany. [i]

However, we see that Hodge, when given the opportunity to run, takes his chance but is cast aside by valentine, in a way because he is no longer useful Valentine has Jace and other believers now.
This is a complex issue to talk about as where the lightwoods were punished just as much as Hodge by having the tutor stay with them as remember most of their assets in Irdus were taken by the clave as punishment, so they would be dependent on the allowance that the clave gives them. Much like many people with a disability are dependent on government allowances, they want to work but are very much passed over because their disability is seen not as an asset but as a liability.

However, this is starting to change and it needs to be in a way because people are starting to see disability differently. Seeing it in a more positive light, and not something to be pitied.
