Clary and Mangus a look at what would happen if this was the real world.

This is going to be an interesting post to write and I am going to expect a fair bit of debate around it as we see that Mangus agreed to the Memory wipes and Joslyn paid him for it. So this starts to pose a very interesting question about what happens when you overprotect someone because of your actions.

As we see that Joslyn had a way to protect herself but not a way to protect Clary and this is very similar to when you are working with a person with a disability as we need to be challenged and protected at the same time. I see that this is a good thing to be protected and challenged. But Clary is at a serious loss when we see that she discovered she is a shadow hunter and doesn’t know who to trust or to go to for help as we see that Luke the person who she sees as her father figure isn’t who he says he is and that we see that she is tolerated but not accepted as she wasn’t brought up as part of their world she was razed in the ”mundane,” world and we see that this becomes an issue.

as the Shadow hunters need to be trained from a young age to be able to protect themselves as they have a mission to protect the world from the threat of demons, and this isn’t just a job to them it’s a lifestyle and we see that in the way that they see the world as they are brought up to see themselves as different from the mundane’s and down worlders that they are supposed to protect and we see that some down worlders can discuss themselves as Mundane’s as we see that when Hodge is discussing Mangus we see that Clary makes a quip about Mangus being the down world equivalent of David Gutter and we see that there is references made to a lot of Down worlders hiding in the mundane world.

we see this with the Warlocks as well and I have a Patreon post around Magnus and the social contract but we see that the Warlocks play by the social rule that is in play by mundane society at the time and it is only the High warlocks that we see that aren’t able to consult or to have a mundane job due to conflicts of interest etc and we see that Mangus from a very young age was able to survive by charging for his services and we see that he isn’t an accurate storyteller as he had to embellish things to gain peoples trust and we see that Hodge does mention that he can invade the silent brothers.

The book readers would know that is because he was raised by them. So would be taught their ways and he has a deep mistrust of them because of the way that they treated Will Herondale when I have finished chain of gold I will do a post on this as it goes to Jace’s intergenerational trauma, and why there was the fire at the Herondale manor in Idris [i]

We also see that this is a place that is dear in the hearts of the Shadow hunters and the worst fate is ex-communication in the case of Hodge not being able to leave the NY institute we see in the books he was a librarian-type person and elderly where in the show the Shadow hunters family named him hot Hodge because they reworked the character to be a person who had physical strength and was the tutor for the Lightwood children but we see in the books he was the children’s guardian.

As it was better for the shadow hunters to have him under their control as they where aware of how close he was to Valentine in the Circle and we see that he was reformed and that they placed a punishment rune on him and the other circle member’s to prevent them taking about the Circle and the uprising, however in real world history talking about what happened and reforming people is considered to be the best practice due to the developments we have seen in in design[ii] people as those who turn into fanatic’s generally want to be a part of something and with society’s decline of organized religion and the separation of church and state we see that people aren’t really able to be a part of the wider community and the rules that we play by have changed in a way that we see isn’t great at times and we see that people seem to see that they decide to keep Hodge in the NY institute and we see in the books he has a green house and he is able to see the sun that way so this is very similar to house arrest for people who commit petty crime[iii] or are taken advantage of due to having a disability and aren’t able to be supported by their families in a way that gets them out of their friendship groups that are bad for them. [iv]

But we see that in both the show and real life it can be taken advantage of as well due to the way that we see the Shadow world working being a mirror into very real-world issues, and we see that this is something that we need to be aware of in both situations as it can be used as a political tool and we see that this isn’t great as it can be used to prevent dissent from political activists or in the case of Hodge to keep him under control but we see that in both the show and real life we see that people find ways around this in the show it is the forsaken attack and in reality it is coded messages or the dark web in getting messages out yet we see that sights like Reddit are increasingly countering their surveillance for this type of activity due to it leading to real-world consequences. We are also seeing a trend towards encouraging social engagement in real life where it is safe to do so in the world to prevent what they call [vi] Hikikomori and this translates roughly to the shut ins or social recluses.

I know that we all had to be one in a way in 2020 and in my case, it led to some massive issues that I am only starting to recover from now. As we see that people can pick up that something was wrong with me and help me in Japan they have what they are calling [vii] "Rent a sister,” so my equivalent would be a support worker and I have developed some close relationships with some of them. As they do become part of the family as they take the burden off my family in a way as they help me with daily tasks like remembering to eat as I don’t pick up on hunger signals or eat a very unbalanced diet.

But the key difference with Hodge is that he has social support as we see that many people live in the institute and he is given something to do in that he is responsible for the Lightwood children and responsible for the archives in the books and we do see that he is given some responsibility in the greenhouse as well as the shadow hunters are mostly self-sufficient in what they eat and drink and there is an early podcast in where Kat (kat McNamara)mentions how do the shadow hunters get there supply’s and this is mentioned in the books that they have “Mundane,” servants.

in the case of the book Magnus, he “procures,” what is needed through magic we see when he meets Alec we see that Alec makes him pay for things. As we do see a different type of Mangus in the Show that he says to a bartender never trust a stingy warlock especially when they have an eternity to acquire wealth. This is something that I see ins quite interesting as we see that the shadow hunters know that the warlocks demand payment before doing anything for anyone and we see that they take payment in rare objects Magnus’s case when we see him consult, we see him counting cash. [viii]

However I got a bit off track as this post is supposed to focus around Mangus and clary but it is interesting to see what did he know and this is where he got a deep mistrust of the shadow hunters as we see that he wouldn’t have approved of Joslyn wiping class memories as we see that he says that you're not helping her you are deceiving her and this isn’t great as she when the Circle members come for Joslyn we see that Clary is left at the mercy of the Shadow hunters and we see that she doesn’t know who to trust and what to do as we see that she isn’t really able to be a part of this world but does become a part of it quite late in the perspective of thing’s as we see that she can learn from all of the Lightwoods, and Alec and Mangus seem to accept her as part of their lives.

We also see that in the real world this is like someone accepting that they have a disability and need to accept it and accept it a term for this is being cared resistant, and it is something that a lot of support workers see in “high functioning people with a disability and I see that I am at times care resistant, and it hasn’t done me any good at times. [ix] Also, care does look very different for me than for someone with a disability as we see that I can do many things for myself but some things like eating and social engagement I do need help with because I can’t drive so I live with a housemate and have support workers in the morning and evening. It also can be a sign that the person is uncomfortable with the care being given or the person who is giving the care. To the person, we do see that it’s a very personal decision to accept care as a person with a disability and some people need to fight for this care.

When we see Mangus in the show for the first time we do wonder if he is a villain or a friend. And as the show progresses, we see the complexity of his character, we see that he has a good heart and can be a friend and eventually a husband to Shadow hunter. And this isn’t something that is a first for the Shadow hunters as Tessa who is part Shadow hunter and part warlock is married to Will Herondale and we see that this has a complexity all of its own. In she is immortal and accepted in both circles of the warlocks and the Shadow hunters, but it gives her children the ability to go into the shadow realms so hell realms at will, or to be just taken. So we see that Mangus is very complex and he doesn’t see the world in black and white as he is immortal and what would have been considered taboo at the times he lived in we see become the mainstream as we see that his sexuality isn’t questioned we see that Alec’s is and we see that Clary being raised as a mundane she accepts and can see that Alec is gay and that Magnus is flirting with him but we see that Alec chooses duty over love until he sees a way to have both and we see that in the show and the books that Mangus won’t put up with being the “shadow hunters pet warlock,” so he breaks up with Alec and forces Alec to grow up.

Much like Clary having to grow up in the show as they don’t kill Joslyn off in the books, but she does pay a price for escaping into the Mundane world, so we see that she can defend clary a bit more, but we see that in the show Clary needs to grow up fairly quickly. As well as Izzy when we see that because of the fall out of Clary coming into this world it has consequences for everyone and it’s everyone else that pays the price so this is what we need to ask as Joslyn wasn’t able to see that her actions would have consequences for everyone else around her, and we see that she wasn’t able to be helped in a way. But in a way, we see that she was able to be helped and people did have compassion for Clary in a way as we see that Clary was able to accept who she was in a way, and this helped the people around her to accept themselves as well.

So in bringing this back to the real world, it is like a person with a disability accepting that they have a disability especially “high functioning people,” as there are very different levels of classification in High functioning and it is a spectrum, as well as some diagnoses, tread a fine line between being a health issue or a disability as fatigue could be considered a health issue but when it comes from a tablet that is used to manage a condition that is considered both a disability and a medical condition such as eleplisy we start to understand the complexity of the NDIS paperwork and why you need a stable diagnoses and why they have such a fine line between a medical condition and a disability as it is based around your day to day functioning. So having what is called a fully functional capacity assessment is a great idea and there are some charities that I know will help fund this as well. But it can be a fight to be accepted as knowing the wording that they use is difficult as well as they use a lot of words that don’t make a lot of sense to people other than people in the industry.
