Clary and Jace and links to disablity culture.

This is going to be an interesting post to write as this clip is a follow-on from where Jace is possessed and Clary is trying to fix up the mess that she created in bringing him back from the dead and in bringing him back from the dead he was vulnerable to possession from Lilith and this being what happened to him he is under possession from Lilith and this is the mother of all demons and a person who can control demons.

Clary Captures Jace And Is Then Arrested By The Clave! - Shadowhunters 3x07 'Hands On Your Head!' - YouTube

So in Clary not being brought up in the Shadow hunter’s world, she doesn’t have a lot of knowledge of demons and the world that they live in and how they act in the world as well as we see that there are a lot of mistakes that Clary makes in lying about what she has done when she knows that the clave possesses a  relic that can force people to tell the truth about a situation and to understand the world she needed to be brought up into that world. Yet in being brought up in this world we see that she didn’t know how to act or react as they have a very different outlook on life and what the Shadowhunters see as acceptable behaviour we see as very aggressive they see as normal. [i]

From a very young age, this shows that they are conditioned to be a Shadowhunter and to see that emotions cloud judgment and that you should use your head and not your heart but this is difficult when we see that people can find a balance of both.

However, when you haven’t been brought up in this world it is very difficult to see what is normal and what is rude as Clary seems to not be aware of the consequences of her actions in this area and how it affects everyone around her this isn’t a great thing in how she acts as she encourages people to go against the rules and this could be considered just as bad as valentine as we see that they have the law for a reason and that this is something that Clary isn’t aware of that the Clave is around for a reason and it is to protect the shadow hunters and to keep order as if one person thinks it’s ok to break the law because they don’t understand it then how can they keep order if others don’t respect the law either.

As we see they say the Law is hard but it is the law and the reason it is so hard is for the protection of both the down worlders that the shadow hunters used to hunt for sport and this kept “them in check,” but they are part “mundane,” as well as demon blooded and this can be a challenge for people due to them having demon blood it makes it harder for them to get through the day as we see that Mia mentions that when talking to Simon in the first season and I will go back and finish the posts about that and how hard it can be to just get through the day as a person with a disability.

As well as that Mia goes against the system, and we see that it needs to be trusted but at the same time a bad law is no law, so we see that laws do need to be reviewed as times change as well.  What happens when the law is abused is what we do see in the shadow hunters as well we see that they can manipulate the law to their end as they are the enforcers of the law and what happens when the laws are abused.

[ii] By those who are supposed to be above them and that there is a better way that people can see so people like Alec who starts the cabinet meetings with the down worlders and that this is something that we see they share information and stop issues before they start to become issues at all and we see that they are complex issues at times and this is similar to what we call community policing as the police become part of the community and prevent issues before they start and then they can see to be able to re-detect those whose behaviour’s could lead to further issues and prevent them from escalating.  Into a massive issue so like community policing. [iii] in the real world where the police start to form relationships with the community that they have been a part of so they are part of the community instead of being part of an institution.

Whereas it was  to be an  insider with  a contrast is the institutional a so an era where we see that a lot of institutions where being built and the community was retreating into these institutions instead of the institutions working together and this is what Alec try’s to do when establishing the downworlder cabinet meetings and we see that it is met with suspicion and then it starts  to work but we see that again communication does break down in what he is trying achieve as his father tells him about a relic that they lost and that can kill those who have demon blood the soul sword and this is a complex issue around the sword as well as we see that it's difficult for Alec as he knows that he needs to be discreet about it however we see that Mangus does find out about it and that it’s difficult for him at times due to being in the relationship with Mangus and wanting to protect the institute as Mangus is Alecs first romantic relationship and we see that this isn’t great lying to your partner about something that could kill them  hasn’t been found and we see that this isn’t great in what they are trying to achieve as we see that they just a bit before talked about trust and this is what this boilies down to trust and trusting each other that the system does work.

(There is a great clip with Matthew Daddario and Harry Shum jr doing an epic rant about not taking home important information if you work in with confidential information.)

However, there are times when it doesn’t work well and we see that it falls in that the Clave is keeping secrets from the institute heads and that they could be helping look for the sword as well but the Clave seems to like the power it has so we see that the power needs to be kept in check and that this is where Alec’s council seems to work and we see that others have tried it in the past but not succeeded so we see that people can work together due to his persistence and we see that there is a place that people seem to understand what people seem to see what he is trying to achieve and he sees what is at risk for the down world.

In Valentine and what needs to change and we see in the final episode that there has been massive reform in that the Down worlders were able to be deputies to the Shadow hunters so are community police and prevent issues before they are escalated. It is a massive issue and an issue around what happens when the institutes are not appropriate for the time.

So in the previous post, I was talking about an instruction that is called Baily Henderson hospital and it was set up for those who were mentally ill, and it was run in a very different way it took what would now be considered to be a social approach to mental illness and disability as it was set up that they Clients had a job within the facility yet I am not saying this approach is the be all and end all but there were issues but we see that there is a place for facilities like this but what does happen when they don’t change.  This is very similar to what would happen when the Shadowhunters don’t move with the times as they essentially live in a very similar environment where they all have a job and jobs are found for people to be “useful,” to the Shadow world.

As we see that their state of existence is battle and this is very similar to people with disabilities that have to battle for what they need whether that be from the government a care organization or from families we see that people need to be aware that this is a battle for people with disabilities however in saying that not everything that hinders a person with a disability is someone else’s fault as having a disability if you can understand that your actions have consequences being a person with a disability isn’t an excuse to be a jerk.

So this is where the complexity of Clary’s lack of decision-making comes in as her mother was doing her a disservice in taking her memories away and not training her in the world as she would have been able to protect herself a lot better so this is similar to where people with disabilities need to be challenged in a way that they can understand the world that they live in and that they, unfortunately, won’t be able to live what most of society considers a normal life.

This would have been better for Clary to understand that she is a shadow hunter and undergo training to protect herself from the demonic world.  However, this is a role that she was born to do essentiality and we see that she is taken under Jace’s wing in a way and then learning on the fly about what to do, and in a way, Alec does look out for her as he sees that Jace sees something in them.

Alec, also we see shares the same view about traditions needing to change as we see that when he clashes with his mother about Max’s rune ceremony party we see that she was taken aback that he was having it at Magnus’s place and we see that his mother is horrified by the thought that they are associating with Down worlders and I see that this is something that has been passed down this thinking that they are better than the Down worlders but are willing to work with them when it is needed. As in the chain of Gold, we see that the head of the London institute during the “social season,” something that we see that the upper classes did to make sure that their daughters did have a good chance of catching a good marriage match and we see that this was the same in the Shadow hunters world but within their communities, as they have their own country so this would be why they need to come to London or their nearest institute to have their children introduced to the heads of the Clave and to have the proper social customs in place.

However, we do see that some of the older shadow hunters have the same attitude towards the shadow hunters doing “mundane,” activities and this includes having a shadow hunters’ picnic. As they believe that the shadow hunters’ natural state is battle and that they should always be on high alert but we see that things aren’t what needs to happen it is more around them preventing these attacks.

This is what Alec is saying when we see that he is the only one who is alarmed that Clary is Valentine’s daughter and sees that known else is alarmed by this and alarmed by the fact that she is the Daughter of a person who went rogue and created an offshoot of shadow hunters who wanted to cleanse the world of demon blood.

So I do understand that Alec sees her as a threat and that we see Jace’s reasoning as well as we see that she is defenceless in this world as Joslyn gave her no tools to survive the world. [iv]

However, this is like when a person needs care and doesn’t know how to ask for it so they need an advocate for them so I see that Jace does become Clary’s advocate and this is something that we see that she can grow into being accepted into the world as we are starting to see a wider acceptance of people with disabilities being accepted into society instead of being placed in institutions.

I live in a unit where I have a support worker check in on me twice a day and 3 days a week we have someone take me out into the community to do things like go to the local shopping centre and to do groceries etc or something as simple as going for a drive and talking and problem-solving.

I know others in this complex as two units are owned by this company we see that they can assist all of us by having us ask for what we need and this for me looks very different from what others have as well so what a shadow hunter needs in training is very different from what a down worlder needs in training when they are turned or discover their powers.

As they all have powers but what they do with them is the challenge and the challenge in thinking with this show is are the shadow hunters good or bad. This becomes so subjective as we see it does depend on the situation they are in as we see that some see the down worlders as “part mundane,” some see them as demonic as well so they are to be avoided, as the older generation of shadow hunters seem to see them as slaves to their impulses but we see that this isn’t the truth we see that it’s the shadow hunters that we see have trouble thinking through what the consequences of their actions are and that they often need help cleaning up their mess.

This is similar to when people with disabilities caregivers or advocates don’t have their best interests at heart and we see that they aren’t able to be objective in caring for the person with a disability as we are seeing in Australia a need for reporting of abuse of vulnerable adults. I won’t go into details but I know of several high profiles stories that we see that the person wasn’t cared for in the way that they expected to be cared for and this is heart-breaking to me and the core of why I started the blog and the Quora space I run as well as it is a way to say hey we are all in this together and we have different needs but these are the very complex issues that we face.

I am also pleased to see that there is people with a disability starting to work within the system to try and change the system as it is quite complex to navigate and some people who know the system are starting to work to get it simple to navigate but some of the key issues are what is a disability and what is a health issue and what do you knock back on the basis that it’s a health issue and can be managed when for another person it’s a disability and affects their ability to live a normal life and so this is where I see that a lot of people who would benefit from the program if they had the help they needed they could work, or volunteer and contribute to a society that way as well so it is quite a complex issue with no easy answers to what needs to happen.

I see that this was what Alec was faced with when he became the official head of the institute and we see that he wasn’t able to please everyone all the time and did struggle with this and we see that this does become an issue as struggling with this is something that I do as well as we see that he is a people pleaser and wants to help people and protect his family but this isn’t something that he can do because Jace was helping Clary when the right thing to do would be to take her to the Clave but we see that Jace was right in not taking her to the Clave as we see that the circle members were able to hide and infiltrate the Clave circles and in doing this we see that they can understand what they are doing and how they are doing it as I will start to talk about her abilities in a later post as we do wonder how far along they would be if they where encouraged from the start and Joslyn didn’t take her away from that world.

As yes it is a brutal world but I feel that Joslyn could have protected her a lot better as we see that in the Bane chronicles that Magnus and Jem where able to help  Jaces ancestors in a way that they would have been able to help Clary but at the same time we do see that Mangus was helping Clary so what did he know as we see that he was apposed to doing the memory wipes yet he did say to Joslyn that you aren’t helping her you are deceiving her and this is very similar to high functioning people with a disability they often by well intentioned family members aren’t told that they are disabled and that they will need extra help for the rest of their lives and it does set them up for disappointment when they can’t work full time or don’t understand social cues in the case of a person with autism and I didn’t know a TBI could cause ADHD like symptoms until I was in my 20s and I do grieve the life I could have had if I developed different skills earlier but I have with a considerable amount of support from family have been able to work to re build a life for myself, and this is a good life and one that challenges myself mentally buy doing this blog.

I am also able to volunteer in my community as well so we see that this is how I keep the social contract of myself being looked after so I feel a lot of guilt that I can’t earn a wage but I see that I do other things in society and I worked so hard that I made myself sick so I need to look after myself as you can’t pour from an empty cup in trying to change things or educate people around what needs to change for society to change.
