The Clave and A look at real world history.

This has been an interesting post to write and work on as it shows how much real-world history is involved in the clave and the Shadow world and I have had some interesting debates with people about what the clave is like and if it is a good or bad organization and we have found some good and bad about it as we see that it’s essentially a military organization and it’s at times authoritarian and at times democratic in that influences in the families that are enforced, and that the families that run the institute can give missions or take volunteers for them.

However, from what I understand the accords are basically like a peacekeeping treaty and the Shadow hunters enforce them.  But the circle is a very interesting concept as it and the uprising have very stark parallels to history.   Where we have an organization within an organization.

The most obvious one is the rise of the[i] Nazi party in Germany leading into World War two as people forget that Hitler was democratically elected and had the plan to clean up the factories and towns as many people were getting sick from the lack of hygiene. [ii] Due to the after-effects of the Spanish flu and this was seen to be a great idea to clean up the factories and get other hygiene measures in place.  Yet we see that it did go a bit too far in the cleaning up as we see that there was then a way to solve a Jewish problem as they controlled a lot of the money in Germany.

This was money that he wanted access to, so he set up people to spy on people and it was the SS and Stassi that carried out a lot of his dirty work.  As we see that he sees the down worlders as second-class citizens.  As well as the Circle is an organization within an organization, so we see that people were only privy to what their superiors wanted to them wanted them to know.

This is parallel to valentine being able to clean up the down world and him not being mentally stable.  As we see that he sees the down worlders as second-class citizens.  As well as the Circle is an organization within an organization, so we see that people were only privy to what their superiors wanted to them wanted them to know.  We also see that they were very classist in the way that they see the down worlders they see them as second-class citizens.

However, we see that this attitude is still very much in the west today with people that have disabilities or other mental health issues.  They are very much classist in their thinking as we see that the shadow hunters don’t deal with disability very well.

The downworlders seem to have much better support for people because they are down worlders and live with what would be considered disabilities in the “mundane world.”   These are the terms that they who live in the shadow world for those who don’t know about it and the shadow hunters have a “holy mission,” to protect the “mundane’s,” from the threat of demons, and from downworlders that can’t control their impulses as we see that a lot of the shadow hunters until they get to know the down worlder see that they are a slave to their impulses and I have written about how their reputations seem to proceed them and we see that they try to fit into the mundane world as much as possible.

This is very similar to the way that people with disabilities try to fit into a society that isn’t built for them.   They seem at times that they are a burden to society and we see in later episodes that the down worlders are considered by some to be a burden.

This plays into real-world history again in World War two that the SS had their own “langue rules,” around what they were doing as it made things that they were doing a lot more “palatable,” as when you give a word a solid meaning it is hard to escape the fact that what you are doing is wrong. When you see on a memo that you are only sending people to a “relocation center,” you see that you’re not doing anything wrong and that it is helping people, but the reality is you aren’t helping people you are actively harming them and harming the people who have the langue rules in place.

However, we do see that people were able to see through these rules and start to question what they were doing or to “fall on their own sword” when they realized what they were doing.  Or were able to see through the rules to what they were doing, and this wasn’t great in a way, and in being precise in your speech is a great thing, and understanding what you are saying is a great thing.

Understanding where you have come from is a good thing and accepting the mistakes you have made in your life and accepting the consequences is a great thing. We see this through Maryse lightwood when she says to Alec at the dinner that she is being detuned we see that she is accepting of her fate and that she knows the punishment is just, However, we do see that there were complex factors at play, her in that Alec asks about his father and he struck a deal, with the Clave.

So in being able to strike a deal how different his role in the uprising is questioned. It was different from Maryse as she was a very talented code breaker and code weaver.  We see that they had a massive amount of training in this world and code-breaking is something that we saw in the second world war and lead to the invention of  Enigma machine[iii] in response to this the bombe at
Bletchley Park [iv]

That kicked off what we know as cryptography today and has morphed into signals so cyber intelligence.  As we know that code breakers are now considered to be the first foray into computers.

These computers had one function but could do more in one day than a team of humans in a week.  We see that the people involved in the creation of these machines in hindsight did have what we would consider Autism today as he was so focused on his work, we don’t understand what it would have been like to go through as it was the world war two that lead to so many technological developments and health developments. (However questionable it was that they recruited the volunteers)

  1. This is a terrific analysis Andrea. I am inspired to get to know more about this Shadow Hunters series.
I feel that in times in my life, despite being white privileged and holding a PhD, I have been relegated to the realm of the downworlders.

Your comment about Hitler is interesting. He was indeed elected democratically but I wonder how functional the democratic process was at the time. I will have to do more research on that. It raised the question for me, can a person capable of such evil also be a force for some good in the world? Or, is any good that he achieved for the German people completed cancelled by his obsession to create a master race and the Third Reich?

Thanks for doing this work Andrea.

  2. Thanks for your kind reply and it has got me thinking about what other real-world events that we see mirrored in a way in this series.
