Shadowhunters | Season 1, Episode 8: Jace Tells Clary Falcon Story | Freeform - YouTube

At this point in time, Clary is new to the world and sees Jace as her guide to the world, yet we are seeing that she has been brought up in a loving protective world, not knowing that she was a Shadowhunter yet we see from this clip that Jace had a very different upbringing torn away from his parent's in Aclantate he was torn from place to place from family to family before being placed with the lightwoods.  This Alicante is the Shadow hunter's "spiritual home," they are placed in the institutes where they live and work but have family manners in Iris.

We know in human families that don't have a nomadic background that being taken from place to place isn't great, and can cause a lot of harm to a child not having a stable family life. In telling her the Falcon story we see that he believes to love is to destroy as he being a child loved the falcon and didn't "tame," it as it is a wild bird.  However, instead of taming it, he loved it and his father snapped its neck. As it would be a burden to the bird of prey if it can't fend for itself.

However the lesson did stick with Jace about love being a cause of destruction, and he was made to believe that he was evil.  This was something that we see Maryse and the Lightwoods do a lot of work to train out of Jace but at his core, we see that there is something in him that itself until Clary arrives he feels he isn't worthy of love, he knows he has good abilities and is cocky in them but we see that she sees love as protection and the love of a family is a good thing as she had a stable upbringing doesn't understand the brutality of the Shadowhunters world.   This is the lesson that Valentine was teaching Jace about love to survive in this world they need to be tough and this means controlling your emotions.  Controlling your emotions at appropriate times is great however what the Shadowhunters are being taught is suppression of emotions and this suppression isn't a good thing it means that your emotions will come out differently, one that isn't healthy at all.

We also see that the lightwoods have very traditional family values in honouring your parents and respecting your elders as well as following traditions yet we do see that Jace is willing to take some liberties around supporting Alec in his decisions around Alec's identity and how this handled with great grace, around Alec suppressing himself as the Shadowhunters are taught from a very young age to conform.

Suppressing your emotions can lead to mental and physical health issues and we see that these are treated with varying degrees of respect in the Shadowhunters world. The Shadowhunters seem to see it as a weakness but the Down worlders seem to be much more aware of it and the consequence's of it, as they have to mask them to get through the day.

This is reminiscent of people with severe mental health issues or disabilities that need help to function from day to day. What level of care they need can vary from day to day and week to week. However, consistency is key in this level of care.  Yet if we have a society that doesn't get the need for education and awareness of mental health issues.  Later in the show, we do see that they have a program from the silent, brothers.  A wholly order of shadow hunters that guard the city of bones and have the role of healers and guards.

Shadowhunters | Season 2, Episode 12: Jace Receives the Herondale Family Ring | Freeform - YouTube

We see that when  Jace receives the family ring from his grandmother and it is a link to his "birthright," and we see that he becomes much more mature and steps into himself and stops his child-like behavior

of dating many girls at once and focusing on the bigger issues.  As he is appointed the head of the institute for not following orders and focusing on seeing what is really going on, in the shadow world with Valentine, the institute was able to see in himself appoints that he isn't a leader he is a soldier and he appoints Alec head of the institute.
