Izzy Lighwood and Simon - Shadowhunters relationships

This is the start of a series on Simon and Izzy Lightwood as I will do a deep dive into the issues that they face as they come into their ship in the later seasons of the show. So things like being the child of an alcoholic and having to hide your lifestyle as Simon just wants to be a normal young adult in the books he wants to go to college and get his degree and play his music. In the show it is he and Maurine in the books it is a full band and they eat at a restaurant dock that is on the docks. But this would be another post as who owns the restaurant becomes important in the show and the books. Izzy comes from a completely different world being home-schooled and doted on by her siblings completely whereas where her other siblings had to compete for attention from their parents. Whereas  Simon was given everything he needed and was willing to work for what he wanted in life.

Simon Lewis comes to the Shadoworld as mundane, through wanting to protect Clary when she finds out she is a Shadowhunter however as I have posted about this journey before and I will do a post on Clary and Simon and their growth in the shadow world as I would like to revisit this post.

As Simon becomes a vampire so a down worlder in the Shadoworld is very class-centric the downworlders are seen as second-class citizens by the Shadowhunters that are supposed to protect them. Yet we do see that this is the same with the Down world and how people come into it, as we see that they come into it in a very different way. Simon wanted to protect Clary was how he came into this world. (spoilers we see that he ends up with Izzy and they decide to become better people.)

Yet the Shadowhunters seem to not be able to get out of their own way of the downworlders. This puts this relationship into one that is very unbalanced through the power imbalance. Of being a downworlder dating a Shadowhunter yet this relationship has less pushback than Magnus and Alec ( I believe this is due to Alec treating the downworlders much more fairly due to Magnus's influence on him as well as it had a very different age gap, as in reality Magnus is either 400 or 800 years old and I worked out he isn't lying about it as the calendars we use to mark time would have changed over time.

They start as friends and can work towards a relationship that isn't trauma-based, as both have their own trauma.  Izzy from her addiction and emotionally starved upbringing, from her mother leading her to act out through promiscuity and using her female charm as a weapon. Honey-trapping people leads her to at first seek out unhealthy relationships. Yet she does make a decision to "grow up," and to not be the distraction leading to some very funny viewing of Alec trying to flirt with a female when they are looking for Clary and Jace.

Honey trapping was something that was used during the second world war, it was where attractive generally young females would be trained how to seduce older men into giving out confidential information, this is where Lydia can put Izzy on trial for giving away state secrets and for essentially saving Meliorn a Seelie she had a relationship with. This can give the women that do it lots of emotional problems and we do see this in the show that she had a deep connection with Meliorn and wanted to keep it going yet for the family she did break up with him.

Shadowhunters 2x12 ~ Isabelle and Simon visit Raphael's sister. Alec and Jace talk about Valentin - on YouTube

We can see that Isabelle knows that Raphael has a sister and this is a message to him that they can get to his sister, we see that even after she breaks up with the Down worlders she dates she can keep some friendships with them. This is her personality coming through and we understand what she can do, in being a better person. As she is very similar to Magnus in searching for experiences rather than connections. So we can see that she is very skilled in the art of emotional manipulation. As she has had a very unhealthy relationship with Raphaelle another Vampire and the leader of the NY clan. That was based on their addiction to each other Raphaelle feeding on Izzy's blood and Izzy getting her high from him when she couldn't get yen fen.

However, we see that she can move on from this relationship with help from several sources and by being honest with herself about the addiction and how it happened I suggest that this is a really good place to start as I see that the posts around addiction have my biggest readership so please if you are struggling to speak up. ( in the post on Izzy and Addiction I put some links to some organizations that can help) we also see that it was Simon that helped Izzy go to the "mundane," groups. These groups are great organizations. As his mother was a high-functioning alcoholic and we see when she discovers he is a vampire at Heidi's hands ( another variation from the books) a subjugate that is a person who hopes to be turned into a vampire.  I see that this is a nod to the books where Magnus and Camille went to a party and saw Mundane's being drained of blood as a show. Yet there is a twist in that we never know who was running the show. As Simon was going through a very rough patch with Clary so he got drunk on plasma. ( the worst thing a vampire can do and it shows a very real reality of what binge drinking can do to a person's friendship network.) As well as the very real consequence's that it can have for the person not aware of what they are doing. Consequences can vary from embarrassing to criminal.
