The Mundane's guide to the Shadow world down worlders Vampire's and the links to disablity.

 Down worlders

These are Supernatural beings and hybrid creatures who inhabit the Shadow world is the widely used term to refer to beings that are said to be part human and part demon or have a disease of demonic origin. Downworlders are even said to be the demonic counterpart of Shadowhunters, who are part human and part angel. They include werewolves, vampires, warlocks, and fairies, they have counted as denizens of heaven. This post will focus on Vampires and their role in the Shadow world and how they can operate in this world and adapt, we will also look at the links to disability in this type of down worlder.

So generally vampires also known as the Children of the Night, are a species.  Downworlders along with werewolves, and vampires are humans infected with a demon disease. However, unlike the former, vampires are considered "undead".  Being undead,, they have been brought back to life or "sired," by another vampire.  In the Shadow World, they live in Clans.  We see a lot of focus on the  New York vampire clan, sometimes referred to as the Manhattan vampire clan, which is a faction of vampires residing in Manhattan, New York banded together as a clan. Based in the Hotel Demort a place that we do see a bit of in the shadow world.

These are the various known clans around the world, I am sure that there would be others.

London vampire clan is a powerful clan of vampires stationed in London.   Camille Belcourt was a member yet at this point in time she was respectful and reported rogue activities to the Clave, this being that they drained Mundane's blood as a show, they also had a club called The Pandemonium Club. that isn't the same as the all-ages nightclub in NY.  We don't have this directly referenced in the Show however it is important to the relationship and development of Magnus, Simon, and Alec as characters in this world.

New York,   Clan members live at the Hotel Demort and have various leaders over the years, the most controversial is Camille Belcourt, as she had gone rogue and then Raphaelle Santiago took over, and this is where Simon Lewis became involved, as he was turned by Camille in the Show in the books he was turned into a rat and bitten by mistake as the vampires try not to feed on humans.

Subjugates, also known by the archaic term darklings, are humans who have consumed enough vampire blood to turn and are considered half-turned. They are typically mundane's that are kept around by vampires to feed on when they're short on blood. These subjugate are loyal to the vampire they serve, drawn to them, and hoping to become vampires themselves once they die.

Thought they were made illegal by the clave. I do believe that in the TV show they made them illegal? If anyone knows please can you comment below if they were made illegal? I am assuming they were as this is why Magnus sent Camille to the Clave to the guard. As she would have broken the accords.

So they have a disease that classifies them as undead, and their weaknesses are grave dirt with this we see that they can be summoned everyone has a weakness and this is one of the many that vampires have.  As well as not being able to go into the Sunlight there is a real condition called  Xeroderma pigmentosum that limits a person's ability to go into the sun, so they have to live their life at night. However, Vampires have powers like being able to create other vampires.

They do this by turning other people, this is a power that should be used wisely as a sire needs to teach her "children," the ropes of being a vampire and living by the accords, yet this is where things get messy as if they are a self-governed community what happens when they go rogue, this is what happened with Camille and Magnus. As she got reckless over the years. She had to flee her mistakes I see that this happens with many of the downloaders that are immortal or long-lived as they have to keep living their life there isn't a beginning middle or end to the story. So they need something to do many take a job in the mundane world or take up positions on councils in the Shadow world.

These councils are very similar to when a person with a disability takes on a volunteer role in the community. However, they realize that they need something that keeps them stimulated but at the same time, people realize their limitations. Like unless you are a Day Lighter a vampire that can walk in the sun people need to have you indoors or out at night this would severely limit the jobs that you can do and how you can do them your also on a limited diet as you can't eat so this is like many medically restricted diets, you learn to adapt to entertain at home, to cook from scratch, to find restaurants that are allergy-friendly.

All things that people with disabilities can do either independently or with support from family friends or paid support people caregivers. This is a great thing as it encourages people to be involved in their community. ( this is something that varies from country to country if you have a program that pay's for caregivers/support workers or if you need to rely on a charity.)  Feel free to email me if your country has a program for people with disabilities that can help with this not just payments but physical and emotional care. I know Brittan has one for paid caregivers, through the local council? Australia has the NDIS please comment or email me about the care programs that you have to get people involved in the community.

We see Alec talking about common sense say when they are searching for the book of the white that is a book that can wake Clary's mum up we see Alec saying about board self-involved decadent vampires when he is locking something up in the safe away from Clary. During the first season, we see that Alec is quite blunt with Clary about the fact that she didn't know her own history. Yet this is ironic that the shadow hunters don't know a large part of their own history as well.

However, we see that Alec is willing to risk his own life to save Clary when Valentine takes Jace as Camille owned the book of the white. As she says she has a lot of time on her hands as they discover she has a unit away from hotel deport, she can get away with a lot more there than at Hotel Deport.

So having Simon wanting a job and normal life is such a shock to the vampire clan, as we do see him pursuing his music with help from  Clary and then his roommate, that is part of the Prater Lupus  (an organization that deserves its own post).

Shadowhunters 2x01 ~ Jocelyn finds out Simon is a Vampire - YouTube Joslyn's reaction is very similar to when people realize that the person they are talking or interacting with has a disability. That they start to see you differently, and this can be difficult for both parties especially in a situation like this when they have known each other for a long time. Also, Joslyn has seen Simon and Clary grow up together. So it can be heartbreaking to know that this has happened to someone, that they have developed a chronic illness or a disability that fundamentally changes the way that they need to live their lives. To have to sit by and watch them struggle as if you intervene you can find that it actually contributes to something called learned helplessness. Something that is very real in the disability community and isn't a great mindset to be in.  However, that is something that can be turned around and something to be encouraged with people with disabilities to not give up on themselves. As I know that I have been there and it's not a great mental state for the people around you to have to pick up the pieces of your life.  But you can learn from it and seek solace in your mistakes. I have put an amazing podcaster in the Reading and I recommended it to most people I encounter.

I know that in the Accord the vampires seek to have animal blood rather than human blood as it is against the accords. Or to have blood that has been donated, yet this is such an interesting topic as it goes back to medically restricted diets, As these can be very real and limit what restaurants and entertaining friends and family people can do. Diets that are very real are, Celiac disease and its related conditions, Ketogenic diets for Eleplisy, Diabetes, and other medical conditions, however, it is a diet that needs to be used under extreme guidance.
