Magnus Bane and Down worlder relationship's - Demons.

Magnus and the Down world Relationships.
This is a continuation of Magnus's relationships and how he is very well connected to the Down world. It focuses on Asmodeus who we discover is his father. We also discover that Alec is relieved that it wasn't one of his exes. As we see that is why Magnus is so powerful as his magic comes from a prince of hell, which is mentioned in most of the  Abrahamic religions. Very early on in the show, we realize that it is set in a very Judeo -Christian world yet we see that angels are almost worshiped.  So Asmodeus being mentioned is a very real way of tying this into what we can see as a mirror of the real world.  I am talking about several clips and how Magus relates to his father and the difficulties they have as adults trying to reconnect when one is more concerned about power than balancing it with compassion.

Shadowhunters 3x02 | Magnus tells Alec about his father - YouTube This clip shows Magnus and Alec working really well together yet, we see that Magnus is starting to lose what is important to him his job and position as the High Warlock of Brooklyn were important to him as it meant status and prestige.  It shows that he is masking what he is really feeling from Alec as there have been times in the relationship where Alec has through his naivety pushed Magnus away.  Now he is starting to have a give and take and teaching Magnus the more politically astute ways of doing things.  This is a great way to have a relationship by talking things out, we also see that Alec is a bit taken aback when Magnus admits that Asmodus is his father, something that he is ashamed of we see that Magnus is now ok with talking about emotions with Alec as they feel safe around each other and even though Alec's official residence is the institute we see that he spends most nights at Magnus place.  This is a great step to have someone being an emotional safety net for you.  As we see Magnus is mostly in control all the time but he lets his guard down around Alec and this is repaid in trust in the 3rd season.

So this clip is amazingly relevant to the real world as it shows people making decisions that they believe are in the person's best interests yet it isn't really as there are unintended consequences. The fact there was a price to pay for both parties as Magnus felt lost without his Magic yet the cost to both of them was to break up. This actually adds to Magnus's trauma that he is going through in this series as he had just learned to trust Alec and this had taken a lot of work for Magnus as he has a deep mistrust of Shadowhunters, given he has seen them not remember or even acknowledge there own history.

We are also seeing what a lot of people do for people in the disability community. Yet there is a trend toward what is called dignity of risk this being that when you give the person all the information they need they can make an informed decision about what they want to do. This also reduces caregiver burnout as well as puts the dignity of the person at the front of mind.

Some practices are used very sparingly. Such as restrictive practices that are only used when a person is at risk of harm.  However, they are heavily regulated and there has to be a lot of paperwork around them. They are generally used as a last resort when other behavior modifications don't work things like positive behavior support plans that reward the person when they display positive behaviors and reduce maladaptive behaviors.

Alec does make the sacrifice to help Magnus feel whole again, as Asmodeus does give him back his magic, yet it does come at a cost to his happiness with Alec, This being that he was happy in the relationship and Alec was going to propose to him, and create a life for himself with Magnus as long as Alec lived. This is a direct example of the law of unintended consequences, being that Alec was prepared to pay the cost but without talking to Magnus about it, it created a situation where the cost was Alec's happiness.

Shadowhunters Season 3, Episode 18 | Alec Tells Izzy About Asmodeus’ Deal | Freeform - YouTube This  Clip ties into what I was saying about making decisions on behalf of other people.
We see that Alec isn't happy with the situation either however he knows it is for the best and this is what he thought was the right option for them, being that they weren't going to be happy apart from each other, we see that Alec starts to become broody about this as he over thinks things. This comes at a cost to Alec's mental health as we see throughout the show run that Magnus teaches Alec to relax at times, he  says in the second season," That there will always be a mission, a problem to solve yet if you don't grant time for the things you care about you will forget why you are fighting at all." So they go on a date to the pub and discover how different they are.  In the fact that Magnus has had a lot of relationships yet, Magnus was Alec's first.

This is so true of so many people who live their lives for others but don't have anything that is their own hobby a book series, a  TV show that they are into.  We see that Magnus separated himself from Asmodus due to him using Magnus's powers to do evil things on earth, (  in the books he is found by the silent brothers, and taken in by them) So he resents his father and tries to make the best of every day yet at times we see that his emotions do get the better of him, we see where he lashes out and I will do a post on his anger.

Shadowhunters 3x18 | Asmodeus gets free - YouTube  In this clip we see Asmodeus escape, his realm as this again is the law of unintended consequences.  Alec aggress to the deal yet doesn't realize for Magnus's father to be able to restore the magic he needs to be on earth. This does help Magnus to be whole again yet at the cost of not seeing Alec, as Asmodus says to Alec that in time Magus would grow to resent Alec as he ages and gets feeble. Yet you can be young and feeble or develop a chronic illness or disability.

Shadowhunters 3x19 | Asmodeus ''helps'' Magnus - YouTube This shows us Asmodus wanting to have a relationship with Magnus and we see in this episode Magnus begrudgingly accepting it, however, there is fault on both sides with their relationship, as Magnus did open an old wound yet it was to help Alec save Jace as he would never recover from it as if Jace dies a part of Alec dies too. Magnus starts to really understand this bond on a deep level. This level was a way forward from what he had seen with Will Herondale in London when he and Camille were living together.  So Asmodus is actually making a lot of sense hearing about not erasing the memories of Alec he needs to live through the pain of this and pain being the path to enlightenment is a very esoteric concept of life linked to the Buddhist way of thinking as we have made life so comfortable we don't honestly know how to wait for things anymore.  We can order a pizza and have it delivered without having to have contact with people yet we as a species need that social interaction.

Magnus, Asmodeus, & Lorenzo scene | Shadowhunters 3x20 - YouTube I love this clip as it shows a bit of humor and how things could work in other realms that the shadow world knows about. Edom is a hell realm, whereas Asmodeus belongs as well as other greater demons that we see in the series. This leads to Magnus getting his apartment back and it makes him happier to be in a place where he is settled as living in the institute came with a lot of judgment.  ( that is getting its own post). It does show that Magnus is willing to let his father help him yet he sees that there is a cost and is aware of it.

Shadowhunters 3x20 | Magnus banishes Asmodeus - YouTube We see Magnus stand up to his Father this being that he needed to do so he and Alec could be together. He has adapted to the mundane world and Asmodeus wants Magnus to rule in Edom one of the hell realms.  Yet we see that he can trap Asmodeus in limbo forever. This is him finally standing up to his father as he essentially went non-contact with him for several years to protect his mental health.  Alec couldn't escape this type of treatment from his mother but with help, she was able to change for the better.  As he learned that Alec was going to ask him to marry him and this is something that Magnus has never done. Yet I do wonder as Magnus is Bisexual was it looked down on to be outside the accepted limits of what was sexually acceptable at the time.   In Australia where I am writing same-sex marriage was illegal until 2017 you could have a civil union but not a marriage.
