Magnus and Blackfriars bridge.

Image
So Magnus I have written about before is a very complex character both in the books and in the show. He is the son of a demon and a prince of hell. He can perform complex magic as is seen as a threat by the other warlocks, because of his power's.  In the books he has a different life story to the show and there was a want from the actor that played Magnus to explore the charcters backstory and how this is amazing for the show if it was to be continued, in various ways.  ( This being Harry Shum jr)  Magnus being a very complex character in the books we don't seem to see much of in the show his powers but one thing is that his realtionship with mental health is an interesting one to look at as, he is immortal.  Yet this isn't over stated in the show, it is mentioned in two seems in the show that he has had struggles with mental health.  We see him as a very hedonist character and this changes when he meets Alec as he has a purpose in life again. He has an anchor to guide him.

Magnus and Alec healing from trauma.

So this is a post that I have been wanting to write for a while, it is an interesting one to get into and I went deep down the rabbit hole that is the "Shadowhunter's fam". But there is so much in this show that isn't overt and one thing that hasn't really been explored in the Magnus and Alec relationship is that they both help each other heal from trauma. Psychological trauma - Wikipedia    Magnus is a magical warlock that presents as a male, who has been in an abusive relationship. While Alec has been brought up to suppress his emotions and in the TV series was willing to go into an arranged marriage to save his family name (a bead or lavender marriage). We see from the first season that Alec cares for Magnus and doesn't presume as the other Shadowhunters do that Magnus can use his magic to fix things. He realizes that magic can come at a cost to people and this cost can be on the person itself. This is an overreaching theme in the TV series but not so much

Disablity and media - Shadowhunter's - Alec

Alec presents as very closed off and suffering from what seems to be anxiety, and not comfortable in his own skin he presents as a very closed person and growing up in what is essential if you were to translate it to the real world a military organization it seems that there is an order of things and the reason he is so closed off and not comfortable in his own skin is he is not acknowledging a very core part of himself his sexuality.   This is raised in the episode, called Raising Hell, ( season 1)  the main character needs to give up memory as a payment for a demon, to get the memory back from Clary the main character, that has been hidden along with relics that belong to the "Shadow world," Alec is a part of an organization that essentially there purpose in life is to keep the Mundine's safe from the Shadow World.  So things that people think are the stuff of legends and fairy tales.  They are raised in what is called the institute, and these institutes are headed up

Actors that are championing diversity in a very real way.

These are two actors I admire Harry Shum jr and Matthew Daddario, that have both received well deserved awards for the work they are doing both on an off screen. I got talking to a friend about them and it was a interesting conversation as  when you talk to people about these two actors only a few hiccups' they have had in there acting careers, and even then they where caused by there colleagues not  themselves.  I know that Harry Shum jr has a interview's  where he says that he isn't in the industry for the fame he is in it to make a difference, he certainly has done this both on and off screen.  It reminded me that it takes very  little to make a difference and how much having a realistic attitude to what you can achieve is amazing. This is key in the disablity community being real and not setting yourself up for major disappointment. As what you can achieve with a disablity can be different to what an able bodied person can.     He has also managed to champion minority

Disablity media and fantasy world's

Farewell to Shadowhunters: Harry Shum Jr. Talks Malec Heartbreak - YouTube This is a really interesting clip as it shows the actor having a deep understanding of what the character he plays goes through. There is an interesting line when he says everyone is happy for his partner but no one is reaching out to his character, and there he goes to family yet his family isn't the best for him and he knows it.  This is so familiar in disability that it hurts, that it's not going away yet people want to push down the pain of it so hard, especially around what people expect of someone with a disability, to have a "normal," life and what is a normal life.  This for people with disabilities is such a loaded question as we aren't a monolith or even have similar viewpoints.  We are at increased risk of abuse and exploitation and understanding this is a huge step forward to accepting that we are one group that we do need help and understanding to see our place in the world a

Disablity and media - Continuing the conversation

This is a topic that I never thought would get so much traction, yet it has generated over on Quora a lot of discussion about how people are represented in the Media. It really does seem that representation of people with a disability is the last frontier, we are represented but not in a positive light.   In fantasy and young adult shows it is shown as something that needs to be overcome or if it is a world that has magic as a part of it, something to be healed, by magic this adds to the shame that people with disabilities feel because they don't fit into society in a normal way or even have what is considered  a normal life path of  School  University/ Tafe,  Work Dating Family of their own.  there is also the issue of being different in a society that still sees disability as something to be ashamed of this is where representation matters to people. To see themselves on a screen, we have seen major leaps around  Diverse casting Diverse screenwriting  Having different styles of
